The IRS allows a business to deduct no more than $25 per recipient each year for gifts to clients. According to IRS information, this limit has been in effect since 1962. A company that spends $120 on a gift basket for a client can only deduct a portion of that cost. This means planning, getting permission, and tracking everything matter as much as what goes inside the basket. A consumer-style hamper builder does not solve that. A corporate one has to.
This guide shows how to sell corporate gift hampers on Magento 2 using MageDelight’s Custom Gift Box extension. Customers build a hamper in three steps, choosing a type, a size, and the products inside. The B2B twist is to make the choices approved: the products on offer, the budget tier, and the hamper types all come from a list the buyer’s company can trust.
It covers persona‑based hampers, an approved‑choice design ordering flow for recipients, personalization, tax and safety checks, and a test plan. It is guidance, not legal or tax advice, so confirm tax and compliance questions with an accountant or counsel.
Three Ways Corporate Buyers Gift
|
Buying model |
How it works |
What the store needs |
|
Buyer-curated |
One buyer builds a hamper design and orders many units, often delivered to one office or split by address |
Approved product list, budget-based sizes, bulk quantities, a way to ship to many addresses |
|
Persona-based sets |
The store offers ready hamper types for roles and occasions, such as new hire, milestone, client thank-you or executive |
Hamper types per persona, with fixed contents or tight choices and consistent presentation |
|
Recipient choice from an approved list |
The company pays and each recipient picks from approved items within a budget |
Account or allowance logic, approved items, per-recipient delivery, and records for tax |
Most real programs mix all three. The extension covers the building experience well. The recipient-choice and many-address parts need planning, as the next section explains.
What the Extension Does, and What It Does Not Say
According to the user manual, which was last updated in August 2025, the extension includes:
• A three-step storefront flow: Choose Hamper Type, Choose Hamper Size, then Choose Hamper Products, with labels and descriptions that you can rename for each step.
• Hamper sizes are measured by dimensions such as length, width, and height or by the number of items. As each product is added to the hamper, a fill percentage is shown.
• An admin grid of hamper products. For each hamper product, you set the name, SKU, stock status, sort order, descriptions, images, videos, URL key, and meta fields. Then you use Hamper Variation to add the products customers may choose from.
• A minimum fill percentage before the hamper can be added to the cart, when sizing by dimensions.
• Filters by brand, price, and other criteria while choosing, plus an Upgrade Hamper popup when a hamper is full.
Three limits matter for corporate use. First, the manual says the extension does not support checkout with addresses. It also does not explain company accounts, approval workflows, per-employee allowances, or how to handle purchase orders. It also doesn't explain company accounts, approval workflows, per-employee allowances, or how to handle purchase orders. The product page lists compatibility with Magento 2.4.x for Open Source, Adobe Commerce, and Adobe Commerce Cloud. It also says the extension works with Hyvä, GraphQL, REST API, and B2B. Check the page for pricing. If there are gaps, use the "Ask for Customization" option.
Prerequisites
• A staging store, with a full backup of the web directory and database.
• Product data, with weight, dimensions (LWH), and clear categories since size logic depends on it.
• Attributes for needs, allergens, alcohol, and shipping restrictions, on each candidate product.
• Your fulfillment team’s input on box sizes, packing time, and cut-off dates.
• A tax advisor or counsel who is willing to review your corporate gifting terms.
Setup, Step by Step
Step 1: Define Personas and Budget Tiers
Start from the people receiving gifts, not from your stock. Write one row per persona. Decide the budget tier, the hamper size, and what must be excluded.

Step 2: Build the Approved Catalog
Approved choices are the heart of the design. In the extension, the products a customer can add come from the Hamper Variation list on each hamper product. Treat that list as the policy.
• Create an attribute such as gift_approved, and tag every product that is safe to offer in corporate hampers. Use it to build the Hamper Variation lists.
• Add safety attributes. Dietary flags, major allergens, contains-alcohol, perishable, and ship-restricted regions.
• Separate lists by persona. A new-hire hamper should not offer a $90 whisky, even if it exists in the store. Use separate hamper products or variation lists.
• Keep prices inside the tier. If each tier has a ceiling, make sure the cheapest and dearest combinations stay within it.
• Review quarterly. Remove discontinued, out-of-stock, and seasonal items.
For filter quality, use clean brand and category data. Shop By Brand and the filtering practices in our navigation guide help buyers find items quickly.
Step 3: Create the Hamper Products
1. Open the extension’s grid and click Add Gift Hamper Product.
2. Set Enable, Attribute Set, Product Name, SKU, and Stock Status. Use SKU conventions that include persona and tier, such as HAMPER-CLIENT-M.
3. Add a short description that states what the hamper is for, the budget, and what can and cannot be added.
4. Use Hamper Variation, then Add Products to Option, and select the approved products for that hamper.
5. Add images and videos, a URL key, and meta fields for each hamper product, so each persona page can rank for its own search.
6. Choose the website, theme and layout, and the Display Product Options setting.
In the configuration, rename the three step labels to match corporate language, for example "Choose the occasion", "Choose your budget" and "Select your gifts". You can edit these labels and descriptions in the manual’s Custom Label settings.
Step 4: Set Fill Rules
• Choose quantity or dimensions. The manual says to set Fill Hamper Calculation Based On either way. Quantity is simple and good for uniform items. Dimensions give a realistic fit and suit mixed sizes.
• Set the minimum fill. With dimension sizing, Allowed Add To Cart lets you require a minimum percentage, so a "large" hamper is not mostly empty.
• Treat the upgrade popup as an upsell, with a ceiling. When a hamper is full, the popup offers a larger one. For corporate programs with fixed budgets, remove tiers above the buyer’s approved maximum.
• Check physical fit with your packers. Dimension logic doesn't account for fragile items or cushioning.
Step 5: Structure Corporate Accounts and Pricing
The extension builds the hamper. Account logic comes from Magento. Use customer groups and catalog price rules in Open Source or the company. Shared catalogs in Adobe Commerce let each company have its own pricing, visible hampers, and payment terms. Advanced Promotions can add volume discounts, and Quick Order By SKU helps repeat buyers reorder fast.
Employee allowances need extra care. A prepaid allowance or store credit given to employees works like a gift card, and the IRS treats cash and cash equivalents given to employees as compensation, not a de minimis fringe benefit, according to Publication 15‑B as quoted by tax guides. Talk to your accountant before you design an allowance and consider offering a fixed non‑cash hamper instead.
Step 6: Plan Ordering for Many Recipients
Because the manual says the extension does not support checkout with multiple addresses, choose a flow before you promise anything to a corporate buyer.
|
Flow |
How it works |
Trade-offs |
|
Single delivery |
The buyer orders N hampers to one office, and the company distributes them |
Simple. No per-recipient personalization |
|
Invitation links |
Each recipient gets a link to a landing page with their approved hamper types, then checks out with their own address, billed to the company account |
Needs custom work or account logic. Good for recipient choice |
|
Admin-assisted bulk |
The buyer sends a spreadsheet of recipients and choices, and your team creates the orders |
Reliable, but needs staff time. Use a clear template and cut-off date |
|
Customization |
Ask MageDelight for multi-address checkout, allowances, or approvals |
Best fit for large programs, at extra cost and time |
Step 7: Personalize and Present
• Gift messages and wrapping. Offer a card message and presentation upgrade with Gift Wrap, and add a company note for executive hampers.
• Logo and custom print. For branded boxes, cards, or items, see the Personalized Product Print Designer.
•Delivery dates. Let buyers choose when the hamper arrives by using Delivery Date and set cut-offs for holiday peaks.
• Neutral packing slips. Do not print prices on slips that go to recipients.
Step 8: Handle Tax, Safety and Policy
|
Area |
What to check |
Practical step |
|
Client gifts |
The deduction cap is $25 per recipient per year. Packaging, engraving, and shipping are generally incidental costs and are not counted toward the cap if they add no substantial value |
Keep per-recipient records: name, date, amount and business purpose. Let buyers export order history |
|
Employee gifts |
Gift cards and cash equivalents are taxable compensation. Rules for other gifts differ |
Avoid cash-equivalent options for employees and consult an accountant |
|
Allergens and food |
Hampers often include packaged food. Labeling duties can apply if you repackage or sell loose items |
Use allergen attributes and filters, keep original labels intact, and follow FDA guidance for your products |
|
Alcohol |
Shipping is regulated state by state and carriers have conditions |
Exclude alcohol by default, or offer it only to approved destinations |
|
Client gift policies |
Many companies cap what staff can give or accept, and some sectors are stricter |
Show the price, ceiling and an "approved for corporate gifting" note on each list |
|
Perishables |
Short shelf life and delivery windows |
Use delivery dates, and avoid perishables for long-lead hampers |
Step 9: Test and Measure
• Place test orders for each persona and size, in quantity and dimension modes.
• Check stock. Confirm whether the selected products decrement their stock and how out-of-stock items behave inside the builder.
• Inspect documents. Check the order view, invoice, packing slip, and warehouse pick list to confirm hamper contents.
• Test the mobile builder, because many buyers start on a phone.
• Verify prices and taxes for company groups.
• Measure the funnel. Track builder starts, completions, size upgrades, and abandonment in GA4 with GTM.
Common Mistakes and Troubleshooting
• Offering "approved" items that are out of stock. Buyers lose trust. Review lists weekly in peak season.
• Promising multi-address delivery. The manual says it is not supported. Agree on a flow first.
• Letting premium items into low tiers. Use separate variation lists.
• Dimension data that is wrong. The fit logic depends on it. Audit LWH for every product.
• Allowances treated as free. A cash-equivalent allowance can be taxable to employees.
• No records for buyers. Corporate customers need order history by recipient and date.
• Ignoring allergens. Add filters and warnings before peak season.
• Seasonal hampers left live after cut-off. Disable them on a schedule.
Which Setup Fits Your Store
• Small store, a handful of corporate clients: use the extension with two or three hamper types, a single-delivery flow and admin-assisted bulk orders.
• Growing B2B program: add customer groups or company accounts, negotiated pricing, and a recipient invitation flow.
• Employee recognition programs: involve an accountant early, avoid cash equivalents, and consider customization for allowances and approvals.
• Seasonal peaks: lock cut-offs, reserve stock early, and test packing capacity.
• Gift cards alongside hampers: a gift card is simple for clients, but remember the tax treatment for employees and the fraud risks of codes.
• Recurring gifting: monthly or quarterly hampers can use Subscribe Now Pro. If memberships auto-renew, read our compliance checklist.
• Hyvä or headless builds: the product page lists Hyvä and GraphQL compatibility. See Hyvä development services and MageDelight’s support service for implementation help.
For most stores, the order is: define personas, build the approved catalog, create two or three hamper products, choose the multi-recipient flow, then test the whole path. The Custom Gift Box extension provides the builder, and the FAQ page answers common setup questions.
FAQ
Can customers pick only from approved products?
Yes, by design. The products that appear in a hamper come from the Hamper Variation list that you set for that hamper. That means only the products you add to the hamper are available.
Does the extension support shipping to many recipients in one order?
No. The manual states that it does not support checkout with multiple addresses. Use single delivery, separate orders per recipient, an admin-assisted bulk process, or a customization.
Are corporate gifts tax deductible?
Client gifts are up to $25 per recipient per year, with incidental costs such as packaging and shipping generally excluded from that cap. Employee gifts follow rules, and cash equivalents are taxable compensation. Ask your accountant about your situation.
Should I size hampers by quantity or dimensions?
Use quantity for uniform items and simple rules. Use dimensions when items vary in size, and you want a fit. Set a minimum fill percentage. This way, large hampers won’t end up half empty.
Does it work with B2B and Hyvä?
The product page lists compatibility with B2B, Hyvä, GraphQL, and the REST API for Magento 2.4.x. Test your company account setup and theme on staging.
